How much do we really understand about our feelings and emotions? In this course, we explore the power of emotions, how the brain processes negative and positive emotions differently, and why this is important when helping individuals better self-regulate their emotions and behavior. Discover why negative emotions tend to take center stage and often become barriers to personal and academic achievement—and strategies to break the cycle. Explore how self-conscious emotions can shut us down or fuel our success, the impact of emotion on memory, how past emotional experiences can impact decision making, and more. Practice using hands-on tools and activities to help your students, clients, and patients understand their own complex emotions to foster development of self-regulation.

We will also unpack topics related to executive functioning, such as organizational skills, social problem solving, and self-regulation across contexts and relevant for Tiers 1, 2 and 3. Some of the many related topics we will also explore include, but are not limited to, the power of metacognition, positive and negative feelings and emotions, the importance of mental time travel, use of the Like-Dislike Scale and the Risk Scale, rallying our motivation, along with the use of templates for students of different ages to target social problem solving.
